Explanation & Rationale Generation as an Agentic Skill
Making the reasoning behind a conclusion intelligible to human reviewers, Explanation & Rationale Generation is the agentic skill through which an AI agent articulates, in human-understandable terms, how a particular conclusion, recommendation, or output was reached.
Its primary function is to reconstruct and communicate the logical chain, evidence considered, assumptions made, and criteria applied in arriving at the agent’s output, thereby rendering otherwise opaque computational decisions more transparent and auditable.
The value of this skill lies in enabling human professionals to assess whether the agent’s reasoning is sound, whether relevant factors were considered, and whether the conclusion is defensible within the specific professional context.
However, this skill is constrained to explaining the reasoning underlying an output rather than tracing the factual origins of information or independently reporting calibrated uncertainty levels. Its accuracy also depends on the foundation model’s capacity to faithfully represent the basis of its output, which may not always perfectly correspond to the underlying computational process.
In human–AI collaboration, this skill supports the professional’s oversight function by providing a basis for evaluating, challenging, or accepting the agent’s outputs, while the human retains the authority to judge whether an explanation is adequate, whether the reasoning is professionally valid, and whether the final decision warrants acceptance, revision, or rejection.
