Optimization as an Agentic Skill
When deployed by AI agents to improve decisions under constraints, Optimization is the agentic skill of searching for best or near-best solutions among feasible alternatives according to defined objectives.
It takes inputs such as goals, limits, costs, resources, and candidate options, then applies mathematical, heuristic, or search-based methods to compare configurations and identify solutions that maximize or minimize desired outcomes.
The skill is useful when a task requires efficient allocation, scheduling, routing, parameter tuning, or trade-off analysis at a scale or speed beyond manual exploration.
However, optimization results depend on how the problem is modeled, including the chosen objective function, constraints, and assumptions, so human professionals often review whether the selected solution is practical, safe, and appropriate in context.
In human–AI work, the agent can generate optimized candidates while the human evaluates implications, validates constraints, and makes the final decision.
