Working with Agentic AI: Network Engineer

How Human Skills and Agentic Skills Dynamically Combine Across Network Engineering Responsibilities

1.1. Network Engineering as Professional Work

A network engineer designs, implements, operates, maintains, secures, monitors, troubleshoots, and improves the networking infrastructure that enables systems, applications, users, devices, sites, and external services to communicate reliably. The role can include network architecture and planning, routing and switching, LAN and WAN engineering, wireless networking, network security, VPN and remote connectivity, IP addressing and network services, cloud and hybrid networking, network automation, performance optimization, capacity planning, monitoring, incident resolution, change management, disaster recovery, documentation, technology evaluation, and support for infrastructure projects. The network engineer works across physical and virtual network devices, communication protocols, network topologies, security controls, cloud environments, monitoring systems, configuration data, traffic patterns, technical standards, and organizational requirements to maintain connectivity, performance, availability, scalability, and security while adapting the network to changing technical and operational needs.
